8th Grade News: October 1-5, 2018

General News
Binder Checks
Shout out to all of our students who earned enough binder check points for the month of September to receive a dress down day last week! Monday will begin October Binder Checks. Please make sure your child has received their new score card. It is each student's responsibility to keep up with their binder, supplies, and score card. (We teachers promise to make sure we are being more consistent with our checks each week!)

PSP
The Pathways to Success Program (PSP) has begun. PSP is a program designed to provide students with extra help in ELA and Math. It meets on Mondays and Tuesdays after school from 3:45-6:00pm, as well as before school from 7:15-8:00am. The focus on Mondays will be ELA, and on Tuesdays the focus will be Math. If you would like your child to receive after school tutoring, PSP is the perfect opportunity. Transportation is also provided! Each month, the 8th grade team selects two exemplary scholars to be the 8th grade students of the month. Congratulations to our 8th grade students of the month for September, Aliyah and Oba!

Students may still complete and turn in their Unit 1 Test Corrections to earn back half the points they missed, which can make a big difference in their overall grade. For each problem missed, students must give the correct answer, show their work, and write one sentence explaining how to find the correct answer. General News
PSP
The Pathways to Success Program (PSP) began last week. PSP is a program designed to provide students with extra help in ELA and Math. It will meet on Mondays and Tuesdays after school from 3:45-6:00pm, as well as before school from 7:15-8:00am. The focus on Mondays will be ELA, and on Tuesdays the focus will be Math. If you would like your child to receive after school tutoring, PSP is the perfect opportunity. Transportation is also provided! Student Incentive - Dress Down Day
Students who have earned between 350-400 points on their binder checks for the month of September will be permitted to be out of uniform this Friday, September 28th. As usual, students out of uniform must still adhere to CCSD/HMS guidelines. The vast majority of our scholars are doing a wonderful job of staying organized - please continue to support your child by ensuring that they continue to have the materials they need to be successful! Last week students took their Unit 1 Test, and it will have a big impact on their overall grades, because this test was our first major grade so far this quarter. Students had the opportunity to earn bonus points by turning in their completed study guides, and will also work on test corrections to earn back some of the points they missed on the test. If you are concerned about your child's performance or academic standing, please don't hesitate to contact your child's math teacher. Students are also encouraged to attend PSP for extra help!

General News
8th Grade Parent Night
Thank you to all of the families who came out to Parent Night this past week! If you were unable to attend, here are the slides that teachers presented to families.

Progress Reports
Progress reports for the 1st Quarter went home with students on Thursday this past week. It is our sincere hope and goal that all of our scholars are passing all of their classes and performing to their full potential. If you are interested in after-school activities to help your child bring his or her grades up, please consider signing up for PSP! More information about PSP is located further below. 

College/Career T-Shirt Day
Our monthly College/Career T-Shirt day will be this Monday, September 17th. Students are encouraged to wear a t-shirt representing a college (or career) with uniform bottoms. Please make sure the college is visible on the shirt, as solid colors are not permitted. Students who do not wish to participate must wear regular uniforms. Our staff will be decked out with shirts from our colleges and we hope students will join us!

21st Century Learning Program

8th Grade News: September 10-14, 2018

General News
8th Grade Parent Night
The 8th Grade Parent Night will be on Monday, September 10th from 6:00-7:30pm. Please join us for a chance to meet & chat with your child's teachers, follow your child's schedule, and receive important information for the year! There are 3 locations at Hilsman 2.0 for parking: (1) in the parking spaces in front of the school; (2) in the gravel lot by the trailers on the Ollie's side of the school; (3) in the gravel lot behind the school. We look forward to seeing you! 

Welcome Ms. Fox!
Please join us in welcoming our new science teacher, Ms. Zinetta Fox, to the 8th grade team! Ms. Fox joins Hilsman with over a decade of teaching experience in Clarke County and we are thrilled to have her join Panther Nation! 

21st Century Learning Program
The 21st Century Learning Program began this past week. A more detailed schedule can be found here, and a copy of the program application can be found here. If you would like your child to participate, you must have submitted an application and must attend an Orientation session. This week there will be an Orientation session on Tuesday, September 11th from 5:15-6:00pm.
