8th Grade News: May 17-21, 2021

 General News

8th Grade Promotion Ceremony
The 8th Grade is having an in-person ceremony this year! See below for the details:
  • The 8th Grade Promotion Ceremony will take place on Wednesday, May 19th at 6:00pm in the Cedar Shoals Gym. 8th grade students should arrive between 5:15-5:30.
  • ALL eligible students -- in-person AND virtual students -- will be invited.
  • Eligible students will be given TWO (2) tickets with their invitation. For social distancing purposes according to district policy, additional family members will not be allowed to attend. Once a student's 2 guests have been allowed into the ceremony, additional individuals will not be granted access to the event. All guests will be required to wear a mask.
  • For IN-PERSON students, Invitations & tickets will be given to students on Tuesday to take home.
  • For VIRTUAL students, Invitations & tickets may be picked up at the front office between 8:00am-3:30pm on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. (NOTE: If a family is unable to pick up their tickets, they will still be allowed into the Ceremony by getting their name and guests checked by a teacher at the entrance.)
  • ONLY students who receive a Promotion Ceremony Invitation will be able to attend.
  • Students must have a cumulative average of 70 or higher, in all core content areas, in order to participate in the ceremony. Students have until May 17th to earn a passing grade in all four core content areas: ELA, Math, Science, and Social Studies. Students who earn the credit after May 17th may earn promotion, but will not be permitted to participate in the Promotion Ceremony.
  • Regarding attire, students typically wear anything from dressy casual to semi-formal, which includes the Hilsman uniform attire. Students should be dressed neatly and adhere to the Hilsman dress code.
  • We are exploring our options with regards to live streaming the ceremony, and will be sure to share the link if we are able to do so. If we are unable to live stream, the ceremony will be recorded and shared at a later date.
Have more questions about the Promotion Ceremony? Please click HERE to submit questions, and a staff member will respond to you within 24 hours!

Promotion Ceremony Rehearsal
8th grade students and teachers will have a Promotion Ceremony Rehearsal on Tuesday, May 18th from 12:15-3:15 in the Cedar Shoals Gym. We will take buses to Cedar Shoals, and return to Hilsman before dismissal. Permission slips will be sent home with in-person students on Monday.

Virtual students are welcome and encouraged to attend the rehearsal, however, they will need transportation to and from Cedar Shoals. We understand this means many virtual students may be unable to participate in the rehearsal, and that's okay! While it would be helpful, it is not required.

Device Collection
For IN-PERSON students, device collection will begin on Monday. This means that students will no longer be taking their laptops home with them or carrying them from class to class. Please take some time over the weekend to ensure that your student has their computer and charger, and that they bring it with them to school on Monday!

For VIRTUAL students, families can drop their computer & charger off any day this week between 8:00am-4:30pm.

Credit Recovery
All students still have the opportunity to turn in missing assignments from every quarter throughout this entire school year! If a student is not passing a class for the year at this point, families can contact their child's teacher(s) to learn more about credit recovery opportunities.

As only students who are passing all of their core classes for the year (an overall grade of 70 or above) will be invited to participate in the Promotion Ceremony, please be sure to check Infinite Campus to ensure that your child is in good academic standing!

Last Day of School - Early Release
The last day of school is this Thursday, May 20th, and it will be an Early Release day for students. Dismissal will be at 12:30pm.

Cedar Shoals 9th Grade Transition Camp
Cedar Shoals High School is excited to host a transition camp for rising 9th graders! The camp will be a one day experience offered on Tuesday, July 20th and July 21st from 1-4pm at Cedar Shoals High School. See the flyer below for more information:

General News

8th Grade Promotion Ceremony
8th Grade is having an in-person Promotion Ceremony this year! The 8th Grade Promotion Ceremony will take place on Wednesday, May 19th at 6:00pm in the Cedar Shoals football stadium. Per the school district, each 8th grader will be permitted 2 guests. Invitations will begin to be sent home with students over the next few days, and 2 tickets will be included inside the invitation. (For Virtual students, invitations will either be mailed home or can be picked up from the front office once they are ready.)

In the event of inclement weather, we will have the Promotion Ceremony on the following morning, May 20th, in the Hilsman gym. (However, guests would not be permitted and we would have to livestream the event -- school district policy this year requires that for graduations and promotion ceremonies, guests are only allowed if the event is held outdoors.)

Only students who are passing all four core subjects (ELA, Math, Science, and Social Studies) for the 2020-2021 school year will be invited to participate in the Promotion Ceremony. Students still have time to turn in old assignments and bring up their grades from *any* quarter this school year.

Stay tuned for more details, and be on the lookout for an invitation soon!
