8th Grade News: September 21-25, 2020

General News

iReady Testing on Tuesday this week
On Tuesday (9/22), all students will be taking the iReady reading and math assessments. Here are some more details:
  • 8th graders will be testing with their 1st period teacher for both tests. Students will spend the duration of 1st and 2nd period taking the iReady reading test, and then after lunch, they will return to their 1st period teacher, where they will spend the duration of 3rd and 4th period taking the iReady math test. There will be no 5th period on Tuesday.
  • These tests will not be for a grade, but rather for students to show what they already know and what they still need to learn so that teachers can best support them!
  • Students should take the assessments on their CCSD laptops - this will make it easier for teachers to help with any troubleshooting or technology issues.
  • Teachers will build in breaks for students throughout testing!
  • For more information on iReady and how to help your child, check this out! (Click here for the Spanish version)

Student Schedules
Thank you for your patience and understanding as some changes have been made to student schedules throughout this past week! We also understand that because of this, some students may have multiple classes listed in Google Classroom, and teachers are now in the process of cleaning that up in order to help clarify things for students. Rather than check Google Classroom for their schedule, students should check Infinite Campus for their most updated, official schedule.

8th Grade News: September 8-11, 2020

Welcome to the 8th Grade! Our team had a great time seeing everyone at the Drive-Thru Open House last week!

General News

First Week of School!
We are so excited to finally be back together, even if it is only online for now. Our focus this week will just be on getting to know each other, learning how to use different features in Zoom, making sure students and families have the materials they need, and going over class procedures and expectations. We know that virtual school is a huge change for everyone, and we want to make sure that students feel comfortable before diving right into academic content!

How Can I Stay Updated?
  1. Check your email. Hilsman will use Campus Messenger to email parents/guardians all school-wide announcements. Follow these directions to sign up:
  2. Sign up for the Hilsman PTO page for more frequent updates. Search Facebook for "Hilsman Middle School PTO, Athens GA"
  3. Check Google Classroom for class announcements.
Google Classroom
This will be your child's "home base!" All materials and assignments will be posted to Google Classroom, which is our school-wide platform. Assignments, instructions, calendars, emails, and Zoom links will be posted in each student's Google Classroom account. Students must check Google Classroom every day!

How Can I Support My Student?
You are the most important person in helping your student succeed, and we want you to partner with us so we can help students be as successful as possible.
  • Help your student establish a routine that includes a consistent bedtime and wake-up time.
  • Help them establish a consistent place to work during class with a table/desk.
  • Help your student find a consistent place for school materials so they always know where their materials are. Help them organize their materials and/or papers for each class.
  • Headphones will be very helpful if there is more than one student attending class from home.
Fridays are Student Support Days - No Class
Classes will not meet on Fridays. Teachers will still be available at their usual Zoom links for additional support and tutoring, and teachers will also be assigning work for students to complete on their own. For specific questions or to set up a time to meet, contact a teacher!

Hilsman Syllabus Signature Form
Each content in each grade across Hilsman is using a Google Form for both students and parents/guardians to fill out indicating that they have the syllabus for each of their classes. Your child's syllabus in each class should be posted on Google Classroom for you to view. When you and your child have had a chance to read through them, please go to bit.ly/hmsform2 in order to "sign" all of the syllabi!
