General News
8th Grade Field Trip - Shakespeare in the Classroom at Cedar Shoals
The 8th grade will be taking a field trip to Cedar Shoals High School this Tuesday, October 30th to listen to speakers from UGA and France discuss Shakespeare and how it's used in the classroom. The trip will take place in the morning and will likely last for approximately the first three periods of the day.

Field Day Success
Our first annual Fall Field Day was an unqualified success, with team spirit levels running high amid some healthy competition, and students certainly enjoyed the opportunity to let off some steam before fall break. Congratulations to Mr. Yungmann's 5th period, who completed the illustrious "double," winning both the flag football AND kickball tournaments!

8th Grade Shout Outs
HUGE congratulations are in order for Emma & Ella and Tory & Ella, who made Hilsman proud this past week by presenting their projects at the FFA National Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana. Both pairs placed in the top 3 in the nation, with Tory and Ella winning second place and Emma and Ella finishing first! A special shout out also goes to Mrs. Martin for all of her advisement and work to prepare these students. Well done, ladies!

Student Incentive - Binder Check Dress Down Day
We are nearing the end of October, which means another month of binder checks are about to be completed. Students who have earned between 350-400 binder check points for the month of October will be permitted to be out of uniform Monday, November 5th. As usual, students who are out of uniform must still adhere to CCSD/HMS guidelines. The vast majority of our students are doing a wonderful job of staying organized - please continue to support your child by ensuring that they have the materials they need to be successful! If you are in need of supplies, please contact your child's homeroom teacher.

Produce Market
Come visit the produce market at Hilsman this Thursday from 4-6pm and get 1 pound of greens for free! Each additional pound will be $2.

High School Class Resources
We would like to offer some resources for students currently in high school classes (Spanish I, High School Physical Science, and Accelerated Math). Georgia Virtual Schools has a sister site that is free, and the modules teach the standards that are consistent with the classes offered. Click here for more information on the procedures for how to use the site. We definitely encourage these students to use this resource at home!

8th Grade News: October 15-19, 2018

General News
Parent Conferences
Hilsman's parent conferences will take place this Wednesday-Friday, October 17th-19th, with Wednesday serving as the late night of conferences. These three days will all be early release - students will be dismissed at 1:30pm in order allow more time for teachers to meet with families. 8th grade teachers will, for the most part, be holding conferences for students in their 5th period classes (this may vary for some students due to some teachers having much larger 5th period classes than others). Something should have been sent home this week by the teacher holding your child's conference, but if not, something should certainly go home on Monday. If you would like to reach out to your child's teacher, the complete 8th grade faculty contact information is listed at the bottom of this blog.

Students have been meeting with their teachers during "advisement" periods to work on setting goals and going over their data in order to prepare for these student-led conferences. Families are such an important link in helping children grow, develop, and improve in their schooling experience, and we welcome this opportunity to meet with you and discuss your child's progress. It is our goal as a school to have 100% participation!

College/Career T-Shirt Day
Our monthly College/Career T-Shirt Day will be this Monday, October 15th. Students are encouraged to wear a t-shirt representing a college (or career) with uniform bottoms. Please make sure the college is visible on the shirt, as solid colors are not permitted. Students who do not wish to participate must wear regular uniforms. Our staff will be decked out with shirts from our colleges and we hope students will join us!

Community Health Night
Community Health Night will take place at Oglethorpe Elementary on Tuesday, October 16th from 6:00-8:00pm. Various community partners will be there to answer questions and provide a variety of health services, including blood pressure checks, blood sugar checks, height/weight, and vision checks, as well as flu shots for the whole family, available at no cost!
