8th Grade News: February 24-28, 2020

General News
Parent Teacher Conferences
Spring parent teacher conferences are next week! On Wednesday, March 4th, students will be dismissed early (at 1:30pm) and teachers will hold conferences until 8:00pm. On Thursday, March 5th, students are off all day and teachers will hold conferences from 8:00am - 8:00pm. There is no school for students or teachers on Friday, March 6th (and then the following week is Spring Break). Please be expecting some communication from your child's homeroom teacher this week to begin scheduling your conference. Spring conferences for 8th graders are particularly exciting - in addition to Quarter 3 report cards, parents will also be receiving their students' schedules for 9th grade!

If you would like to reach out to your child's teacher, the complete 8th grade faculty contact information is listed at the bottom of this blog. Families are such an important link in helping children grow, develop, and improve in their schooling experience, and we welcome this opportunity to meet with you and discuss your child's progress. It is our goal as a school to have 100% participation!

College & Career T-Shirt Day
Our monthly College/Career T-Shirt day will be this Monday, February 24th. Students are encouraged to wear a t-shirt representing a college (or career) with uniform bottoms. Please make sure the college is visible on the shirt, as solid colors are not permitted. Students who do not wish to participate must wear regular uniforms. Our staff will be decked out with shirts from our colleges and we hope students will join us!

Rising 9th Grade Parent Night
All parents and families of rising 9th graders are invited to Rising 9th Grade Parent Night this Thursday, February 27th at 6:00pm in the Cedar Shoals Auditorium. They will cover the transition to high school, graduation requirements, important upcoming events, and opportunities to be engaged at Cedar. We look forward to seeing you there!

HilsMART
Hilsman Middle School PTO would like to invite you to participate in our first ever HilsMART, a yard sale, vendor, and talent show extravaganza! On SATURDAY, FEB 29 from 10am-2pm in the Hilsman cafeteria and halls.

SIGN UP to rent a table ($15 pre-pay or $20 day of event - register by Feb. 21). Bring YOUR stuff (yard sale items, crafts, art, etc.) and sell them and KEEP ALL THE PROCEEDS. Your trash is another's treasure! Clean out or share your wares while supporting the mission of the Hilsman PTO - to enhance school spirit, support teachers and staff, and raise funds for student-focused initiatives like our new student leadership council.

Everyone in the community is welcome to rent a table (8 ft.) or come shop. We will have food vendors and entertainment. Set up begins at 8am - doors open at 10am. Students who attend will receive a coupon for a dress-down day! We also welcome business sponsors. Questions? Email HilsmanPTO@gmail.com.

Spring Break Food Drive
The Hilsman Food Pantry will be holding a food drive during the month of February to provide food for students and families in our community during Spring Break. We are asking specifically for dried or canned goods that can be used as breakfast or lunch items. The homeroom with the most donations will be rewarded with a dress down day!

Family & Consumer Science:
This coming week in Family and Consumer Science, our eighth graders will begin to learn about and demonstrate knowledge of personal finance and money management strategies. We will learn how to use budgeting to balance our income and expenses, in addition to learning about the many different ways to pay for things, exploring types of taxes, insurance, and other investments, and examining the pros and cons of using credit cards. We will have an open-notes pop quiz to check for understanding and note completion later on in the week, which will serve as a 60% summative assessment grade for the current unit. Please encourage your student to do their best!

Students took their Unit 1 Test on Friday; they will receive these tests back by Tuesday and can do test corrections in complete sentences or schedule a retake if they are unhappy with their scores. This must be finished by Friday, February 21st.
