8th Grade News: February 3-7, 2020

General News
Q3 Progress Reports
Progress Reports for Quarter 3 are being sent home with students this week. These provide the 4.5 week notice of how your child is progressing in their classes for this quarter. If you have questions or concerns about your child's grades, please reach out to your child's teacher(s) - a full 8th grade faculty contact list is provided at the bottom of this blog. Please check Parent Portal frequently so that we can address any academic concerns early!

Read With Malcolm Reading Rally!
Malcolm Mitchell, author of The Magician's Hat, founder of the Read With Malcolm Literacy Program, partner of the Share the Magic Foundation, and former football player for UGA and the New England Patriots, will be here at Hilsman on Wednesday, February 5th to speak with and motivate our students. We will also have other esteemed guests in attendance. Let's RALLY!

Credit Recovery
Credit Recovery is an after-school program designed to help students who failed one or more classes from Quarter 2. Students who attend Credit Recovery and complete the work may have their failing grade(s) changed to passing ones in order to avoid summer school or the risk of being retained. Credit Recovery meets on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays (and some Thursdays). The program started this last week and will run through March. For more information or to get your child signed up, please contact Ms. Ward (wardt@clarke.k12.ga.us).

Field Trip Opportunity!
8th grade students in Clarke County will have a chance to visit the National Memorial for Peace and Justice and the Legacy Museum: From Enslavement to Mass Incarceration in Montgomery, Alabama. The field trip will take place on 3/19/20 from about 7am-8pm and will be completely funded by a grant and private donations. Students will apply through video responses using this FlipGrid, and a committee of school and district staff will choose 10 "winners" from each middle school. The deadline to submit video responses is 2/21/20!

Spring Break Food Drive
The Hilsman Food Pantry will be holding a food drive during the month of February to provide food for students and families in our community during Spring Break. We are asking specifically for dried or canned goods that can be used as breakfast or lunch items. The homeroom with the most donations will be rewarded with a dress down day!

Career Academy Info Session
The Athens Community Career Academy (ACCA) is holding an event on Tuesday, February 11th from 5:30pm-7:30pm to help students and families learn more about all of the amazing opportunities they provide! See more information below.
