Fall Conferences
Thank you so much to all of the families who were able to meet with teachers this past Friday! We had an excellent turnout, and it was great to have the opportunity to meet with families and discuss their child's glows and grows. If you weren't able to meet for your conference on Friday, please expect some communication from your child's teacher about meeting this week for your conference.

FREE Back to School COVID Testing
CCSD is partnering with DPH and UGA to offer free COVID testing on Tuesday 11/3 at Clarke Central. See the flyer below for more details!

Students Interested in Participating in Sports
You MUST have an up-to-date athletic physical completed by a doctor before you can try out for or participate in any athletic activity. You must also maintain academic eligibility, so make sure you're doing your best to keep your first quarter grades above passing!

Here is a blank copy of the 2020-2021 CCSD Physical Form - bring it to your doctor, a Reddy clinic, or make an appointment at the Hilsman Health Center to get this done. Physicals expire after 1 year, so if you had one last year, it may be expired. You can email our Athletic Director, Ms. Seymour, at seymoure@clarke.k12.ga.us if you have any questions about this.

We don't know yet what winter or spring sports will look like, but will get that information out as soon as possible!

8th Grade News: October 26-30, 2020

General News

Return to School on November 9th
Clarke County School District has officially announced plans for K-8 students to begin in-person instruction on November 9th, with families also having the option to remain virtual. Here is the latest update from the school district, which was sent to families and posted on their website on Friday, October 23rd. For your reference, all documents are posted on the district website under the "Reopening Info" tab.

We know that there are still many very important questions regarding our return, and we will be sharing pertinent information in the coming days and weeks as it becomes available.

Hilsman Reopening Plan - Town Hall Video & Slideshow
Last week, the Hilsman administration hosted a virtual town hall for our school community in order to share more details about our reopening plan and give families the opportunity to ask questions about our return. If you were not able to attend, you can watch the recording and view the slideshow at the links below:

(The recording will be available to watch through October 27th)

Fall Conferences - Friday, October 30th
Fall conferences will be held this Friday, October 30th, and will be done virtually, either through Zoom or on the phone. During conferences, families will get a chance to (1) learn more information about Hilsman's re-entry plan, (2) see how their student is progressing in their classes so far this year, (3) go over their student's iReady test scores in math and reading, and (4) discuss any other questions or concerns with teachers. If you have not yet been contacted by your child's teacher, please be expecting communication from them early this week as we schedule conferences!

If you would like to reach out to your child's teacher, the complete 8th grade faculty contact information is listed at the bottom of this blog. Families are such an important link in helping children grow, develop, and improve in their schooling experience, and we welcome this opportunity to meet with you and discuss your child's progress. It is our goal as a school to have 100% participation!

1st Quarter Grading Window Ends Tuesday at Noon!
It's hard to believe that we're already almost done with our first 9 weeks of the school year! The grading window for this first quarter ends this Tuesday, and then teachers will be posting final grades for the quarter - these are the grades that will go on report cards and will count towards students' final grades for the year. It is our sincere hope that all of our students are passing all of their classes and performing to their full academic potential, so we encourage everyone to be checking Infinite Campus frequently and using this weekend + Monday as an opportunity to be checking in with teachers and completing any missing assignments.

CCSD Announces K-8 Return to School on November 9th
Last week, the Clarke County School District officially announced plans for K-8 students to begin in-person instruction on November 9th. Here is the latest update from the school district, which was sent to families and posted on their website on Friday, October 16th. For your reference, all documents are posted on the district website under the "Reopening Info" tab.

We know that there are bound to be many very important questions regarding our return, and we will be sharing pertinent information in the coming days and weeks as it becomes available.

Choose to Return In-Person or Stay Virtual
Families have the option to remain virtual if they would like. Please note that the school district is asking families to indicate whether they would prefer to return in-person or stay virtual through Infinite Campus Parent Portal. To allow time for schools to plan for their re-entry, families are being asked to make their choice in Parent Portal by October 18th (although families should be able to change their preference based on new information between then and our potential return date). Instructions for school re-entry registration can be found here.

Virtual Town Hall Tuesday
The Hilsman administration will be holding a Virtual Town Hall this Tuesday, October 20th from 4:00-5:00pm in order to try to answer questions from families regarding our School Re-Entry Plan. The Zoom link will be shared soon!

Interim Assessments This Week
This week, all students will be taking Interim Assessments, given by the school district to help monitor student progress. Students will be taking these assessments for all four core subjects - math, language arts, science, and social studies. See below for the testing schedule on these days:
  • Tuesday 10/20: Students will take their Connections Interim Assessments in their connections classes (regular schedule)
