8th Grade News: December 17-20, 2018

Shoutout to the 8th grade band for their awesome performance at the winter concert last week!
General News
Last week before winter break!
We are only four days away from the end of Quarter 2, and we know that this is a busy time of the year for families. It is our sincere hope that all of our students are passing all of their classes and performing to their full academic potential, so we encourage everyone to be checking parent portal and using this final week as an opportunity to be checking in with teachers and completing any missing assignments.

College & Career T-Shirt Day
Our monthly College/Career T-Shirt day will be this Monday, December 17th. Students are encouraged to wear a t-shirt representing a college (or career) with uniform bottoms. Please make sure the college is visible on the shirt, as solid colors are not permitted. Students who do not wish to participate must wear regular uniforms. Our staff will be decked out with shirts from our colleges and we hope students will join us!

House Party
A message from Mr. Forker:

To celebrate the hard work of our students and teachers, we will have a school-wide house party on Thursday 12/20/2018 from 2:30 until dismissal. See details below:
- Parties will take place by grade level.
- Teachers will host house rooms/areas with designated activities (i.e., movies, sports, tech room, game room, karaoke room, etc.)
- During the party, 7th and 8th grade students from house Iron and 6th-8th grade students from house Copper will be invited to the cafe to celebrate their Q4 and Q1 victories (respectively)

Keep up the good work!

General News
SMI/SRI Assessments
This past week, students took both the Scholastic Math Inventory (SMI) and Scholastic Reading Inventory (SRI) tests, and so many of our students showed fantastic growth from when we last took these assessments in August. (For example, over 70 8th graders increased their SMI score by over 100 points!) Of course, our students are so much more than just their test scores, but we still want to celebrate them when we can! The 8th grade teachers will be hosting a pizza party during lunch later this week for students who exhibited outstanding achievement and growth.

Washington DC Field Trip Meeting
There will be a meeting on Tuesday, December 11th at 6:00pm in Mr. Blake's room (509) for families of students interested in going on the 8th grade field trip to Washington DC in May. For more information, please contact Mr. Blake (blakee@clarke.k12.ga.us).

Band Concert
Please join the Hilsman band for their winter concert on Monday, December 10th at 6:30pm in the Cedar Shoals auditorium!

AVID - December Binder Checks
December binder checks have started! As we continue moving forward with binder checks, teachers will eventually begin checking for their own content-specific materials and assignments. Additionally, Spanish and ELT teachers will no longer be conducting binder checks either - only math, ELA, science, and social studies teachers will be checking binders from here on out, beginning this month. The vast majority of our students are doing a wonderful job of staying organized - please continue to support your child by ensuring that they have the materials they need to be successful! If you are in need of supplies, please contact your child's homeroom teacher.

General News
The Hate U Give Reflections
The 8th grade went on a field trip this past week to see The Hate U Give in theaters, and teachers followed up the viewing with conversations, discussions, and reflection assignments in class in order to help students process the film's powerful, important themes. (A HUGE thank you to Ms. Chester, Mrs. Page, and Mr. Blake for making this awesome experience happen for our students!) The administration is working to coordinate with Officer Johnson and the ACCPD to bring in some officers and other community members some time this week to hold an open forum with our students, where they will have the opportunity to ask questions about what they saw in the film.

We would like to share with families some resources that you might find helpful in discussing the film at home with your child as our students continue to process these very important and relevant themes. Here are some guiding discussion questions related to the film that teachers used as conversation-starters with students in class, and below are some resources we hope you find useful as well. If you know of or come across something else you think is helpful, please don't hesitate to share it!

Dress Down Day - Monday December 3rd
Students who earned at least 250 binder check points over the month of November will be permitted to dress out of uniform this Monday (the required total is lower than usual because of Thanksgiving break). As usual, students who are out of uniform must still adhere to CCSD/HMS guidelines. As we continue moving forward with binder checks, teachers will begin checking for their own content-specific materials and assignments. Additionally, Spanish and ELT teachers will no longer be conducting binder checks either - only math, ELA, science, and social studies teachers will be checking binders from here on out, beginning this month.

8th Grade Shout Outs - Students of the Month
Each month, the 8th grade team selects two exemplary scholars to be the 8th grade students of the month. Congratulations to our 8th grade students of the month for November, Mandrell and Megan!

SMI/SRI Testing
All 8th graders will be taking the Scholastic Math Inventory (SMI) and Scholastic Reading Inventory (SRI) assessments this week. The SMI will be Wednesday morning, and the SRI will be Thursday morning. It is our hope that every student will show improvement on these tests from when we last took them back in August!

8th Grade News: November 26-30, 2018

Students started learning about functions last week in math!

General News
8th Grade Movie Field Trip Update
The 8th grade will be taking a field trip on Thursday, November 29th to go see the movie The Hate U Give. In order to attend, students must turn in a signed permission slip and $10, which will cover the cost of a ticket, popcorn, and a drink. We are also planning to supplement the viewing of the film with a panel of guest speakers from around the community in an attempt to help students unpack their thoughts on some of the film's important themes. If your child hasn't brought home a permission slip yet, that's all right - just make sure they remember to get one on Monday, or feel free to contact your child's homeroom teacher. We are so excited!

A/AB Honors Ceremony
Please join Ms. Tolbert on Tuesday, November 27th at 6:30pm in the cafeteria to celebrate students who earned all As or all As and Bs in the first quarter grading period. We are extremely proud of our students and their accomplishments! Students will be receiving their invitations at school on Monday.

Progress Reports
Progress reports went home with students last week. They provide the 4.5 week notice of how your child is progressing in their classes for this quarter. If you have questions or concerns about your child's grades, please reach out to your child's teacher(s) - a full 8th grade faculty contact list is provided at the bottom of this blog. Please check Parent Portal frequently so that we can address any academic concerns early! If you would like your child to receive extra help, PSP meets after school on Mondays and Tuesdays, and transportation is provided! Please contact Ms. Ward (wardt@clarke.k12.ga.us) if you're interested or want more information.

Can-A-Thon
As we approach the holiday season, the 8th grade team is partnering with the Food Bank of Northeast Georgia to hold a canned food drive. We will be competing by homerooms to see who can raise the most canned foods, and the winning homeroom will receive a pizza party! The Can-A-Thon will last until the end of the month, and a flyer was sent home with students with more information.
