8th Grade News: September 30-October 4, 2019

Thank you to these wonderful eighth graders who were nominated by their teachers to help lead a game day in the Media Center on Friday for the students on Team Gora!

General News
Last Week of 1st Quarter
This week marks the last week of the first quarter. This means that students must submit any missing assignments by the end of the week, as teachers will be submitting final grades for report cards in the coming days, and parents will receive report cards at conferences (more information on conferences is forthcoming, but they will take place on October 16-17). If you have questions or concerns about your child's grades or academic standing, please contact their teacher(s). A full contact list for the 8th grade faculty is listed at the bottom of the blog.

Hilfest
Don't forget that the first Hilfest at our new building will be on Saturday, October 5th from 10:00am-1:00pm. We look forward to seeing everyone there!

Community Health Night 2019 @ the Hilsman Healthcare Center
The doctor is in at Hilsman and Gaines! All students and staff at Gaines Elementary will soon have easy access to sick visits, well visits, immunizations, dental services, counseling services, and more.

The Hilsman Healthcare Center, located behind the gym, will have its grand opening on October 8th, and will coincide with CCSD's Community Health Night! The overall goal of Community Health Night is to connect families with local health resources. Last year, we had a variety of health and wellness related vendors including asthma & diabetes educators, vision & dental resources, the Clarke County Health Department, National EMS, behavioral health providers, exercise and nutrition resources, and many more. We had over 75 vendors and 500+ attendees!

Fall Picture Day at Hilsman will be October 11th. Flyers will be coming home soon with more information!

8th Grade News: September 23-27, 2019

Congratulations to the boys cross country team and their amazing coach, Ms. Seymour, on winning first place in the JV race at their meet at Crow's Lake this past week! Go Panthers!

College & Career T-Shirt Day - Monday 9/23
Our monthly College/Career T-Shirt day will be this Monday, September 23rd. Students are encouraged to wear a t-shirt representing a college (or career) with uniform bottoms. Please make sure the college is visible on the shirt, as solid colors are not permitted. Students who do not wish to participate must wear regular uniforms. Our staff will be decked out with shirts from our colleges and we hope students will join us!

Washington DC Trip Parent Meeting - Thursday 9/26
There will be a parent meeting for students interested in going on the 8th Grade Field Trip to Washington DC on Thursday, September 26th at 6:00pm in the cafeteria. Q1 Progress Reports
Progress Reports for Quarter 1 went home on Wednesday this past week. If you have not signed and returned the progress report envelope, please do so as soon as possible, as we are planning to use the same envelopes all year to help track progress. These progress reports provide the 4.5 week notice of how your child is progressing in their classes for this quarter. This fall, Athens United will be holding practices for all players interested in playing soccer. The practices will be held at Whit Davis Elementary. The focus of the training sessions will be enhancing athletes' technical and tactical skills. Fall practice is open to all players enrolled in Clarke County Elementary, Middle, and High Schools. We hope players attend as many practices as possible. The cost for the entire season is $50 for elementary, and $100 for middle and high schoolers. This is an excellent opportunity to receive some great coaching and practice, especially for girls not already playing organized soccer. General News
Q1 Progress Reports

21st Century After School Program
21st Century Classes began on Tuesday, September 3rd. A parent or guardian must attend an Orientation prior to the student attending classes. Students must complete an application and enroll in order to attend classes. Students can be picked up by parents or ride one of the 21st Century buses. 21st Century applications are in the office or with Mrs. Dalton (daltonm@clarke.k12.ga.us) and Ms. Hughes (hughesa@clarke.k12.ga.us).

Cedar Shoals Swim Team Information
For any 7th or 8th grade student interested in joining the Cedar Shoals Swim Team, there will be a parent meeting on September 9th at 6pm in Room D207 at Cedar Shoals High School. 8th graders can officially participate in competition and practice as JV, and 7th graders can participate in practices. Connections News
Band:
The Cedar Shoals High School Band invites all 8th grade band students to join them for the home football game between Cedar Shoals and Clarke Central High School on October 4, 2019! If your student is interested, please complete and return the permission slip sent home with your student on Thursday last week.

The band Rock-A-Thon will not take place on September 13 as stated in the syllabus due to construction in the gymnasium. It will take place in late November or early December depending on the Cedar Shoals football schedule!

Spanish:
We will begin a new unit learning how to talk about the things we like to do.

Business Ed:
Mr. Lingerfelt will be out of class all week. The substitute has instructions to have students complete the Everfi.com modules they have been working on in class for the past couple of weeks by Wednesday 9/11.

Thursday 9/12 and Friday 9/13 all students will be researching an entrepreneur and will write a paper that is due Monday 9/16 at the beginning of class. The grading rubric and expectations will be discussed at length during class Friday 9/6.

Art:
Next week, 8th graders will be finishing up their Kara Walker-inspired silhouette portraits and starting a new project: 3D graffiti names!

Agriscience:
We are going to be hot and heavy in our Plant Science Unit next week! We will be performing a lab experiment on Seed Germination that will be recorded throughout the week using buckwheat seeds.
