Connections News
Art:
8th grade will be continuing a project called Black History Mystery! They are creating grid drawings of small sections of portraits and will piece them together once they are painted. This project is giving students an opportunity to integrate their math skills by carefully making grid measurements. This is also an important project, as pictures will be submitted to Athfest Educates to show how donated drying racks are being used in the art room!

Family & Consumer Science:
8th grade FCS will continue working to demonstrate employability skills by practicing problem solving, critical thinking, decision making, and time management. We will begin the week on Tuesday with a continuation of our article on "How Resilient People Use Failure to Their Advantage," and will have the opportunity to perform some hands-on group activities to put the aforementioned skills to the test. Students will have their first open-note Unit quiz on Wednesday.

Ag Science & FFA:
Hello everyone! My name is Greg Brav, and I am the new Agricultural Science teacher at Hilsman. This week, 8th grade will begin their 2-week "Importance of Agriculture" unit. We will study the history of ag, and how the field has changed in modern times. We will also use class time to plan our SAE projects.

The "Supervised Agricultural Experience" is the only homework assigned to Ag students all quarter and counts for 2 summative grades. Students will design and complete a project that relates to agriculture to help themselves, their family, or their community. I will stay after school all semester on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4-5 if students would prefer to work on their project at school instead of at home.

Our school's FFA chapter will meet on the first and last Thursday of every month from 4-5, and all AgSci students are encouraged to attend meetings.

Students need to fill out a permission slip to stay after school for SAE workdays or FFA meetings, and are welcome to ride the activity bus home from Hilsman. Please reach out if you questions, or if you would like to support the school agriculture program in any way.

Thank you!

-Mr. Brav

Band & Orchestra:
The Hilsman Band and Orchestra Rock-a-Thon will take place Friday, January 31st from 6:00pm - 12:00pm. Please ask your student for the information packet if you haven't already seen it. Fundraising should be in full swing at this point so we can meet our goals!

Family & Consumer Science:
Next week, FCS students will continue to work on developing employability skills. We will practice teamwork and communication, appreciate our diversity as we recognize that each of our unique perspectives and strengths are important components of a well-rounded team, and examine how our brains can grow to become more resilient as we struggle through hardship.

Please make sure that your student's FCS syllabus has been signed and turned in!

PE:
Monday: Running Fitness
Tuesday: Upper Body Fitness
Wednesday: Aerobic Game
Thursday: Flexibility
Friday: Activity Day

Business Ed:
Public Speech presentations will be starting Wednesday, January 15th.

Assignment parameters:
- Poem/Song/Speech - Can be someone else's or your own original work
- No profanity or offensive language
- Any piece must be approved by Mr. Lingerfelt
- Memorized (mostly)
- Minimum of 1 minute long
- Turn in a paper copy of words for teacher and grade!

Art:
Next week, 8th graders will start a project called Black History Mystery! They will do a grid drawing of a 1/4 of a face each day and, in the end, they will piece them together to see who they have drawn! They will also be painting the grid's specific color schemes along the way.
