8th Grade News: September 3-6, 2019

General News
Buy a Dress Down Day on Tuesday!
Students can buy a dress down day on Tuesday with the stamps they have collected on the yellow pages in their agenda. The price depends on how many discipline signatures they have on their white discipline pages:
0-1 signatures on their white discipline pages = 5 stamps to purchase
2-3 signatures on their white discipline pages = 10 stamps to purchase
4-5 signatures on their white discipline pages = 20 stamps to purchase

Students who have lost their 1st quarter white discipline page cannot purchase anything with the stamps on their yellow pages until next quarter, or if they buy a new white discipline page (price to be determined, perhaps 50 stamps to purchase). Students who have lost their agenda can purchase a new one for $10 in the main office.

What a great first week!
We had a wonderful debut week in our new building. Thank you to all of the teachers, staff, students, families, and community members who helped make this exciting transition as smooth as possible! We are still ironing out some details that come with adjusting to such a newer, larger building, so we greatly appreciate everyone's patience and flexibility. It's great to be a Hilsman Panther!

Labor Day Weekend
Don't forget that there is no school for students or staff on Monday. We hope everyone enjoys another long weekend! (And students get their THIRD consecutive short week!)

21st Century After School Program
21st Century Classes will begin on Tuesday, September 3rd. A parent or guardian must attend an Orientation prior to the student attending classes. The Orientation will take place on Monday, August 26th at the new Hilsman immediately after Open House concludes (around 8:00pm in the cafeteria).

Students must complete an application and enroll in order to attend classes. Students can be picked up by parents or ride one of the 21st Century buses. 21st Century applications are in the office or with Mrs. Dalton and Ms. Hughes.

General News
It's MOVING TIME! No School Friday 8/23 & Monday 8/26
IT'S FINALLY TIME! Remember that Hilsman students do not have school this Friday 8/23 and Monday 8/26 so teachers can move into our beautiful new school building. All classes will resume on Tuesday 8/27 at the new Hilsman. There will be an Open House on Monday 8/26 from 5:30-8:00pm for families to come see all of the amazing things our new location has to offer! Check out a sneak preview below...

Our science classrooms come complete with tables, counters, sinks, and supply closets designed especially for lab equipment!
Our expansive hallways have lockers built into them, and each locker already has its own lock so students won't need to bring their own!
So much natural light!
Our new Media Center looks AMAZING!
Our cafetorium has more than enough space for entire grade levels and comes complete with a performance stage too!
It's still a work in progress, but the new Hilsman will soon have its very own brand new soccer field behind the school!
No one is more excited for the move than Mr. Martin!

MAP Testing Continues This Week

Students began MAP testing last Thursday in ELT (3rd period). Students are taking the Reading (Monday) and Math (Tuesday) assessments this week. Students who score 10+ points higher than their spring score on Language or Reading will be able to visit the new building this week on Thursday morning! If they score 10+ points higher on both, they will also earn 10 stamps in their agenda on their yellow PAWS pages. If they score 10+ points higher on Math, they will earn 10 stamps as well!

The MAP Growth Assessments are used to accurately schedule ELT classes, to help students set academic goals, and to monitor students' progress throughout the year. For more information, check out the answers to 12 Common Questions Parents ask about the MAP Growth Assessment.

Agenda Spotlight: Discipline Pages
Have you seen your student's agenda? If not, ask them to see it! Check out the white discipline pages after the yellow PAWS pages. If students are not meeting class or school expectations, they might get a signature on these white pages. Usually, they are receiving one or more warnings before receiving a signature. Each signature is also accompanied by a call home.

The first signature during a quarter is a warning. The second signature results in the student spending one day in another grade level while doing their work from their regular classes. The third signature results in an after school detention with a teacher from 4:00-4:30pm (on either a Tuesday or Thursday). The fourth signature results in an after school detention with an administrator from 4:00-4:45pm. The fifth signature results in a Saturday detention from an administrator from 8:00am-12:00pm. The sixth and more signatures result in an office referral. Have questions about the discipline plan? Send us an email and let us know so we can answer them!

Fundraisers are available for students who need help raising their money for their membership dues. See Mrs. Purcell for more information or to join FFA!

8th Grade News: August 12-16, 2019

General News
Thanks for a great first week!
We would like to thank all of the parents, guardians, families, and community members who helped make this a wonderful first week of school at Hilsman! The first week of school can can be a little hectic as everyone adjusts to new routines, but we are so grateful for our Hilsman family's support and cooperation as we continue to iron out some kinks. It's going to be an awesome year!

Agendas
Every student received an agenda this week. Agendas are used daily in every class and contain pages for students to receive "stamps" from teachers, which students can then use to earn incentives like dress down days, catered lunches, etc. Ask your child to show you their stamps page!

School Supplies Reminder
Students need to make sure they have the following supplies:
- 2" binder or trapper keeper
- School Agenda
- Pencil pouch/pencil case
- At least 2 pencils, 2 colored pens, 2 highlighters
- Dividers
- Notebook paper
- Homework folder

**Depending on the class, a composition notebook may be requested by teachers**

If you have any questions or concerns about school supplies, please email Christina Fassbender (fassbenderc@clarke.k12.ga.us).

Have a question about your student's schedule?
Hopefully most of our scheduling issues were fixed this past week, but if you still have questions or concerns, you can email your student's homeroom teacher (email addresses are below) or call the front office and leave a message. We'll help you as soon as possible and we greatly appreciate your patience during what is always a busy time of year!

ELT will be during 3rd period for all grade levels this year. However, students will report to homeroom for advisement during this class period until we move to the new building.

Volleyball Tryouts
Volleyball tryouts for 7th and 8th graders will be on Tuesday from 4:30-6:00pm. The location will likely be our gym at the previous Hilsman location, but has not been confirmed yet. Students must be academically eligible and have a current physical on file. Please contact our Athletic Director, Mr. Randall Watkins, at @watkinsra@clarke.k12.ga.us for more info.

No School - August 23 & 26
Hilsman students do not have school on Friday 8/23 and Monday 8/26 so teachers can move into our beautiful new school building. All classes will resume on Tuesday 8/27 at the new Hilsman.
