Thank you to Malcolm Mitchell and the Share the Magic Foundation for visiting the Hil this week and talking to our kiddos about the importance of reading!

General News
8th Grade Field Trip to Cedar Shoals
On Tuesday we will be going on our annual field trip to Cedar Shoals High School, where students will be given a glimpse of everything high school has to offer by hearing from administrators, teachers, and current students, who will lead them on a walking tour around campus. Students will be given permission forms on Monday and must get them signed by a parent/guardian in order to attend.

Career Academy Info Session
The Athens Community Career Academy (ACCA) is holding an event on Tuesday, February 11th from 5:30pm-7:30pm to help students and families learn more about all of the amazing opportunities they provide! See more information below.

Field Trip Opportunity!
8th grade students in Clarke County will have a chance to visit the National Memorial for Peace and Justice and the Legacy Museum: From Enslavement to Mass Incarceration in Montgomery, Alabama. The field trip will take place on 3/19/20 from about 7am-8pm and will be completely funded by a grant and private donations. Students will apply through video responses using this FlipGrid, and a committee of school and district staff will choose 10 "winners" from each middle school. The deadline to submit video responses is 2/21/20!

Connections News
Family & Consumer Science:
This coming week in Family and Consumer Science, our eighth graders will begin to learn about and demonstrate knowledge of personal finance and money management strategies. We will learn how to use budgeting to balance our income and expenses, in addition to learning about the many different ways to pay for things, exploring types of taxes, insurance, and other investments, and examining the pros and cons of using credit cards. We will have an open-notes pop quiz to check for understanding and note completion later on in the week, which will serve as a 60% summative assessment grade for the current unit. Please encourage your student to do their best!

Students took their Unit 1 Test on Friday; they will receive these tests back by Tuesday and can do test corrections in complete sentences or schedule a retake if they are unhappy with their scores. This must be finished by Friday, February 21st.
