Pick Up New Math Textbooks - Tuesday, January 19th
Students will soon need the next volume of their math textbooks in order to continue their work and complete assignments! Families can come by Hilsman any time between 8:00am-4:00pm on Tuesday, January 19th to pick up Volume 2 of their math textbook.

Q2 Report Cards - Grading Window Closes Monday Jan. 18th
The grading window for the second quarter ends Monday 1/18, and then teachers will be posting final grades for the quarter - these are the grades that will go on report cards and will count towards students' final grades for the year. It is our sincere hope that all of our students are passing all of their classes and performing to their full academic potential, so we encourage everyone to be checking Infinite Campus/Google Classroom frequently and completing any missing assignments.

Virtual Mid-Year Open House
We will be hosting a Mid-Year Open House on Zoom this Thursday, January 21st from 4:30-6:45pm. Come join us to hear from our administrators about updates for the second half of the school year, and attend breakout sessions to follow your child's schedule and hear from their teachers! The Zoom link will be shared by Principal Douglass to the school community via Infinite Campus messenger. We look forward to seeing you on Thursday!

Credit Recovery
Students who failed classes in Quarter 1 and/or Quarter 2 will have the opportunity to participate in Credit Recovery, which will take place January 19-March 1. Students who participate will meet regularly after school with teachers on Zoom to work on Credit Recovery assignments, and upon completion, students will have their failing grade(s) from the previous Quarters be changed to passing. Credit Recovery is available for core classes only -- Math, ELA, Science, and Social Studies.

CCSD to Remain All Virtual
Due to the increasingly high number of COVID cases in Athens and the surrounding areas, the Clarke County School District announced last week that the return to in-person learning will be postponed for all students K-12 to a later date. (Previously, K-8 students were scheduled to have the option of returning on January 19th.)

While a specific date of a potential return has not been given, the district will be providing a further update this week. Click here to read the letter from our Superintendent, Dr. Xernona Thomas, sent out to the CCSD community last week. (Spanish version)

Middle School Athletics Postponed
Due to the recently announced district decision, ALL middle school athletics will be postponed indefinitely. In the event that Hilsman transitions back to a hybrid or in-person model, the middle school Athletics Directors will reconsider and make a safe and healthy decision for students and families.

Interim Tests This Week
This week, students will be taking Interim Assessments in each of their classes. These tests, which will count towards students' overall grades, are cumulative and will cover material that students have been learning throughout Quarter 2. Interims will be taken on the following days:

Monday 1/11: ELA
Tuesday 1/12: Math
Wednesday 1/13: Science
Thursday: 1/14: Social Studies

To allow for plenty of time for students to take each test, we will be on a modified testing schedule for this week only. See below for our daily schedule this week:

No Zoom Classes - Friday, January 15th
Note that this Friday, January 15th is a teacher workday. This means Friday will be an asynchronous workday for students, meaning there will be no Zoom classes. Instead, they will have assignments posted on Google Classroom that they will work on independently.

8th Grade News: January 4-8, 2021

General News

Virtual-Only Instruction Until January 19th
Based on the spread of COVID-19 in our community and its impact on staffing levels, Clarke County School District has made the decision to move back to remote-only instruction for the first two weeks of school in January, with a plan for K-8 schools to resume in-person instruction on January 19th, 2021.

Zoom Classes Will Begin Wednesday Jan. 6th
Monday-Tuesday Jan. 4-5 are teacher workdays, which means there will no Zoom classes on Monday or Tuesday this week. Instead, those days will be asynchronous work days for students, meaning teachers will be posting assignments on Google Classroom for students to work on independently.

Q3 Registration
Registration is now open for Quarter 3 (January 19 - March 10, 2021). In-person and virtual learning models will be offered for all Pre-K through 8th grade students. Please take time as a family to make a decision that works best for your situation and your student. Families will have the opportunity to revise their selection by January 6th, 2021. Please note that if you do not select an instructional model, your student will be registered for in-person instruction.

Because virtual and in-person staffing models are determined based on registration numbers, principals will not be able to accommodate moving students from one model to the other when Quarter 3 begins.

SOME IMPORTANT NOTES:
  • The instructional model you select will remain in place for the duration of Quarter 3 (January 19-March 10, 2021).
  • Student registration is conducted through your Infinite Campus Parent Portal account. Your child's current teacher may call you to confirm the model you select over the next few week, as we need accurate data for planning purposes and staffing.
  • If you select Face-to-Face as your student's instructional model, please indicate if your student will require bus transportation.
HOW TO REGISTER:
  1. To register the instructional model preference for your student(s), login to your Infinite Campus Parent Portal account and make the appropriate selection.
  2. Guided instructions are available on the main page of Infinite Campus under "District Announcements."
  3. If you have not created a Parent Portal account or need to reset your Parent Portal account password, please send an email to campus@clarke.k12.ga.us for further assistance.
For more information and details, please see this letter from our interim superintendent, Dr. Thomas.

7th & 8th Graders Interested in Participating in Winter Sports
  • Tryouts for Basketball and Cheer will take place during the week of January 11th, a week after we return from the holiday break. BEFORE that time, you must have a Current athletic physical on file with Ms. Seymour (you can get these done in the Hilsman clinic or elsewhere) -- these expire after 1 year, so if you had one last year, it is probably expired and you will need a new one, and a signed Covid-19 Clearance form on file with Ms. Seymour.
  • Students who are Virtual OR Face-to-Face can try out, as long as they have a ride to practices at Hilsman, have the correct forms, and have academic eligibility for Quarter 1 AND Quarter 2. You can NOT fail more than 1 class in either report card this year to be eligible.
  • Team sizes will be limited, and extra precautionary measures will take place to make sure and keep students and families safe.
Students should contact their respective potential coaches so we can estimate how many students will plan to attend tryouts, beginning the week of January 11, 2021:
  • Cheerleading coach: Tanya Dillard-Jernigan dillardjernigant@clarke.k12.ga.us
  • Boys basketball coach: Vernon Hughes hughesv@clarke.k12.ga.us
  • Girls basketball coaches: Jameka Maddox maddoxj@clarke.k12.ga.us, Greg Brav bravg@clarke.k12.ga.us
Here is the link for a copy of the blank physical form and the link for a copy of the blank Clearance, Insurance, and Consent form, which needs to be completed by a medical professional and can be done with an appointment at the Hilsman Health Clinic or any other licensed medical practice.

Important Upcoming Dates
Please be aware of the following upcoming dates and events. Note that this list will continue to be added to each week as more events are planned and scheduled, and also that some of these dates are subject to change:
