8th Grade News: January 7-11, 2019

General News
Report Cards
The second nine weeks of school have come to an end, which means teachers will be submitting final grades for Q2 report cards in the coming days. Report cards will be distributed and sent home Thursday, January 10th. If you have questions or concerns about your child's grades or academic standing, please contact their teacher(s). A full contact list for the 8th grade faculty is listed at the bottom of the blog.

Upcoming important 8th grade dates
The spring semester of 8th grade is filled with opportunities and activities geared towards preparing students for high school and beyond. Although the following dates are relatively far away, we want to put them on your radar:

February 12th- 8th grade field trip to Cedar Shoals
February 27th- Cedar Shoals counselors visit Hilsman to help 8th graders begin selecting their classes for next year
March 5th- Rising 9th grade parent night at Cedar Shoals, 6pm
March 25th & 28th- 8th grade field trip to UGA

Washington DC Trip Sign Up Info
Spaces are still available to sign up for the 8th grade field trip to Washington DC in May! If you're interested, please contact Mr. Blake (blakee@clarke.k12.ga.us) for more information.

Math News:
8th Grade
Monday: Modeling linear relationships
Tuesday: Interpreting rate of change & initial value; Binder Checks
Wednesday: Representations of a line
Thursday: Increasing and decreasing functions
Friday: Increasing and decreasing functions

**We will be beginning Unit 5: Linear Models & Tables upon our return from the holiday break. We strongly recommend students review their notes over the break to keep their skills sharp! Weekly reviews for the Georgia Milestone End-of-Grade (EOG) Assessment will begin in January as homework.

**Students are highly encouraged to attend PSP on Tuesday afternoons for extra help! If you are interested in attending, please contact Ms. Ward (wardt@clarke.k12.ga.us).

Accelerated Math
Monday: Symmetries of quadrilaterals
Tuesday: Symmetries of symmetrical polygons; Binder Checks
Wednesday: Group quiz
Thursday: Using coordinates to find distance
Friday: Proving slope criteria for parallel and perpendicular lines

**More specific information on assignments, upcoming dates, etc. will be specified via group email.

ELA News:
**In January, we will begin our poetry and figurative language unit. Students will also be a provided a Milestones Review to complete over the break. Students that complete the review will receive an incentive when we return from break.

Science News:
8th Grade
**Upon return, students will review Unit 4 standards, conduct follow up labs, and take their weekly DSP quiz on that Friday. The following week we will begin the new unit on waves.

**In the meantime, students will continue to be able to access MobyMax modules and Quizizz modules (via Google classroom) to gain extra credit for their DSP quiz average for quarter 2. The last day to earn extra credit is December 31st.

High School Science
Monday: Reminders about lab from before break and set up for lab tomorrow; Binder Checks
Tuesday: Lab day and analysis questions!
Wednesday: Balancing chemical equations
Thursday: Balancing chemical equations practice
Friday: Balancing equations quiz

Spanish 8th Grade
**We will start a new semester with 3 new groups.

**Expectations, classroom rules, and reviewing past concepts will be covered the first week after the break.

Spanish I
Monday: Review possessive adjectives
Tuesday: Vocabulary la famila quiz
Wednesday: Reading comprehension - Pobre Ana chapters 6-7
Thursday: Study hall for midterm
Friday: Midterm (comprehensive test)

**There will be Spanish tutoring on Mondays from 4:00-5:30 in Ms. Viera's room.
